Numerous health conditions are influenced by an intricate interplay of environmental factors, behavioral choices, and genetic predispositions. While individual actions, such as abstaining from smoking, can mitigate certain health risks, the genetic risks encoded within an individual's DNA persist throughout their lifetime. Notably, these genetic susceptibilities can be mitigated through the adoption of healthier behaviors.

Ongoing scientific research aims to discern the full spectrum of genetic elements that predispose individuals to various diseases. Preliminary findings indicate that specific genetic markers can effectively stratify individuals according to their risk for certain conditions. By examining your genome, a cumulative genetic risk score can be computed, allowing for comparison of an individual's genetic risk against global population data. This application serves as a tool for assessing genetic risk while emphasizing the potential of behavioral modifications to alleviate said risks.

The primary objective of this study is to investigate how genetic risk informs health-related decisions and controllable lifestyle factors. The initial focus is on calculating genetic risk scores pertaining to coronary artery disease (CAD), a leading contributor to heart attacks, heart failure, and sudden cardiac death, underscoring its status as the foremost cause of mortality worldwide. Previous research has successfully employed these genetic risk scores to categorize individuals into low, intermediate, and high-risk groups for CAD. Furthermore, evidence suggests that individuals identified with a heightened genetic risk derive substantial benefits from statin therapy in terms of reducing their likelihood of heart attacks. Importantly, it has been established that healthy lifestyle choices can counterbalance genetic predispositions towards CAD—even among those with elevated risk levels.
